I saw a bat hunting in the middle of the day yesterday in full sunlight. It was active for a good hour, was quite large and light brown (definitely a bat!). Location was above a river in a wooded valley in North Northumberland.
Has any one got any ideas what species it may have been and why it was feeding in the middle of the day?
Thanks

Hi Richard
Only bats I have seen flying during daylight have been pipistrelles and long-eared bats, but pipistrelles are small and long-eared bats have very obvious long ears! The one most associated with water is Daubentons, but this hawks really low over the water to feed. I think it also has an obvious white belly? If it was significantly larger that these, then most likely is noctule. You could try looking at the Bat Conservation Trust website at http://www.bats.org.uk/pages/uk_bat_species.html.
