Late WBM's
Reply Quote
I am working with a farmer who is looking to plant a WBM in the next couple of weeks. Does anyone have any suggestions for a mixture that can be put in late, yet still produce viable seeds overwinter? The farm is on light, chalky soils, and the target species are corn bunting, grey partridge, skylark, yellowhammer and linnet.

Thanks in advance

Bruce

Bruce,

I would suggest a mix as follows

6.75kg buckwheat - large seed but viable from mid summer planting
1.25kg fodder radish - will seed, don't want too much or it will swamp everything else
1kg white mustard - may well seed given a favourable autumn
0.75kg kale rape - provides winter hardy canopy to help support above
0.25kg brown mustard - may well seed given a favourable autumn.

10kg/acre

Such a mix would need to go in asap and ideally drilled in 15" rows at 0.5" depth.

A light top dressing of fertiliser will help kick it on - too much though will drag it down later in the year.

In terms of targetting key bird species we are getting to the time of year where any seed production is a result however these plant species have the potential to supply a range of seed sizes for several key farmland bird species to go at.

I hope this helps.
