Beech

How well does beech respond to coppicing ?

I am thinking of cutting some overgrown hedge standards to the ground to generate new, thick hedge growth.

TIA, Mike.

I think it hugely depends on the age of the beech - older standards are unlikely to respond well. It also seems to work better in the wetter, western parts of the UK?

I took the top of a newly planted hedge in the hope of making it thick and bushy and found out afterwards that I should have let it grow to desired height first. It took a very long time to reach the height I wanted and was not very thick or bushy!!!

Thanks for the answers, and apologies I have been slow to respond.

Sounds like I should be wary of coppicing beech.

Mike.
