Painted ladies

The invasion of painted ladies has been spectacular this month. I was thinking there must be a lot of suitable habitat somewhere to produce so many buttrflies. Does anyone know where most of these buttrflies emerge from - french farmland, the Alps, further afield??

The butterflies are originating from about 1000 miles away in the Atlas Mountains of North Africa, where it is reported that heavy winter rains allowed good germination of the caterpillars food plants. There is more information on the Butterfly Conservation website.
