Farmland Bird Feeding Stations could be a lifeline in these harsh weather conditions

A lot of farmland birds will be wasting energy flying around looking for food now that their tradtional sources such as over wintered stubbles and wild bird seed mixes are covered with deep snow. Putting out grain for farmland birds close to farmsteads or where farm animals are being out wintered (and being fed with supplementary food) may work.

Clearing away strips of snow with a loading shovel on a stubble field alongside a hedge to expose the ground underneath and then scattering grain will attract a lot of farmland birds such as yellowhammers reed buntings, tree sparrows, corn buntings and skylarks.

The attached RSPB advisory sheet gives the latest advice on managing feeding stations for farmland birds.
