Monitoring of HLS farm
Reply Quote
Just thought I'd post a bit of good news !

We are having a farm monitored for it's breeding farmland birds starting this year, which entered into HLS in 2006 (Toft Farm, Warwickshire - farmer Stuart Russell). The farm is 400ha, with 50ha wetland creation, lots of arable options and favourable hedgerow management. Most importantly, the farm is profitable, with high quality arable crops (useful when demonstrating to other farmers). The consultant is focussing on the 19 PSA indicators, plus Barn Owl, breeding waders and Brown Hare. Early days, but already we have 17 out of the 19 confirmed as breeding (the only ones missing are Rook ! and Corn Bunting (which has never bred in the area), and peak counts of 19 Brown Hare ! With the right options, over the right area, with the committed farmer, the schemes really deliver !
