As a general rule the skylarks on our farm tend to avoid the oilseed rape in favour of the winter wheat and spring beans unless the oilseed rape has established poorly. If the skylarks choose to nest in oilseed rape in April they are able to complete a full breeding cycle we do have at least one nest with chicks at the moment. We have rarely found second broods in the rape by then the crop has become too tall.   Chris Bailey Farm Manager RSPB Grange Farm    Report

07 May 2009, 5:15 PM alauda26 Joined on 10 Jan 2006 Oxfordshire Posts 81 Re: Skylarks in WOSR I remember that in the late 90s the latest research was showing that skylarks would hold territories in WOSR, but would rarely nest there (Wilson et al, 1997 Journal of Applied Ecology 34, and Wakeham-Dawson et al, 1998 Journal of Applied Ecology 35).   On the site where I did a little skylark research none of the 24 nests were in WOSR, despite it making up nearly 20% of the area.    Report
